George Allcock

Profile

Based in England, George Allcock is a structural designer and design manager with years of exhaustive worldwide experience in structural consultancy for buildings and specialist design of tall structures for broadcast, with a special interest in the development of new products and non-standard designs. He has designed buildings for industrial plants and for educational and commercial establishments.

Allcock is contributor to the development of British Standards and Eurocodes and is a member of B/525/32 (Masts and Towers) committee

Creative, innovative and flexible, Allcock has a proven track record of analysing problems, structural or otherwise, and devising practical ways of tackling them

Allcock is an expert at structural engineering involving design of communications masts and towers and had extensive involvement in the UK Digital Switchover. Allcock has designed radar towers for airports at Gatwick, Geneva, Amsterdam and Dubai, among others

United Kingdom

  • New design of various masts and towers and foundations including a series of 100m heavy duty cellular angle towers, a series of 40-50-60-80m tubular cellular hub towers, and a variety of types of self-deploying trailer mounted monopole and latticed gravity masts up to 20m high.
  • 337m broadcast Mast, Caldbeck (largest broadcast mast in UK), Cumbria, including erection design.
  • Instrumental in gaining contract for extension of Sutton Coldfield main mast (to 272m), justified for substantial increase in top loading by sophisticated analysis using an innovative combination of existing British Standards and the (then incomplete) Eurocodes, including safety-critical detailing for helicopter erection design, £2.5m & profitable in excess of budget.
  • Design of completely re-useable 225m temporary mast for Sutton Coldfield using screwpiled foundations.
  • Analysis, strengthening, new platforms and antenna frames for 212m Crystal Palace tower.
  • Took part in Kaizen project to integrate and restructure design activities for UK digital switchover; rewrote and streamlined Company structural procedures and QA documentation gaining plaudits from assessors; rewrote Company fabrication specification and testing procedures.
  • Ground preparation for and design of a portal framed bottling plant on a site then occupied by a lake and deep silt infill left by gravel extraction in Cumbria.

Nigeria

  • Brokered an agreement and structural solution in-country for an impasse affecting an overseas contract for 18 large cellular towers.
  • Lightweight 220m TV masts with large slotted pole antennae including erection design.
  • New 35 and 40m tower families on freestanding steel kentledge bases.

Brunei

  • Refurbishment of 161m Andalau mast including detailed analysis of mast and foundations, design of strengthening for additional load, fatigue analysis to EN1993-1-9 to justify further 15 years of life, MS for swapping out stays
  • New design of various masts and towers and foundations including a series of 100m heavy duty cellular angle towers, a series of 40-50-60-80m tubular cellular hub towers, and a variety of types of self-deploying trailer mounted monopole and latticed gravity masts up to 20m high.

Vietnam

  • 250m (freestanding) TV Tower for Ho Chi Minh City.

Middle East

  • Analysis for refurbishment, guy and linkage changes and guy replacement for a 201m broadcast mast and a 220m radiating mast with candelabra.
  • Radar towers for airports.

Pakistan

  • New 35 and 40m tower families on freestanding steel kentledge bases.
